Sofie van Kempen is a qualified nutritionist, foodie, passionate gut health advocate, chicken mumma, suburban farmer and the brains behind her workshop business. She loves to cook wholesome food based on ingredients your grandparents would recognise as food. Sofie believes that being well, healthy & happy begins in the gut and loves to demonstrate just how simple that can be. 

Sofie leads her life with her partner Tom aka Farmer Tom. They grow produce, cook real food, parent chooks, eat organic, opt for no processed food, preservatives and additives especially with Sofie's health conditions. They do their best to live a waste free lifestyle and try to educate and assist whenever they can through workshops and social media.

Nutritionist Sofie van Kempen is bringing her Crap Free Christmas workshop back to The Source Bulk Food Stores Bulimba & Springfield after the first workshops were a sell out! Sofie is here to help you stay on track during the festive season with her Crap Free Christmas Workshop! Because she believes we have all gotten a little sick of feeling like crap over the Christmas period when the food can still taste just as good, IF NOT BETTER without the crappy ingredients. Think healthy rum balls, Christmas stuffing, lychee mojitos, gingerbread bliss balls, veggie loaded dips. All the delicious recipes we devour over the festive season will be demonstrated in this workshop.

I think it is safe to say Farmer Tom is the green thumb in this bad-ass duo (yes I am a self proclaimed bad-ass) Tom grows the veggies, I cook the veggies. Tom and I kind of go together like peas and carrots really. We would love to help educate you on how to grow your own produce at home, whether it is talking about soil, planting, seasonal produce, harvesting etc. In our Grow platform we aim to help educate you on how to grow your own produce at home, whether it is talking about soil, planting, seasonal produce, harvesting etc. We are no experts however we seem to have a pretty awesome garden set up so we (Tom) are obviously doing something right. There is a huge focus across our grow platform for aiming towards organic, spray free and sustainable practice.

Fermenting Grains, Beans, Nuts & Seeds

Do you have trouble digesting grains, beans, nuts and seeds? I find if I ferment mine before cooking them it helps my digestive system to break them down. Basically they aren't left undigested in my stole (if you know me well enough you know I can't resist throwing in some poo chat) and I also absorb my nutrients better. Great idea to do this to aid your digestion even if you don't find you have too much difficulty digesting them ๐Ÿ˜ you know me.. all about that gut health ๐Ÿ’ฉ plus really you don't know until you try it! The amount of people who have attended one of my gut health workshops and realised after implementing a few remedies at home they are actually bloated and have been for a long time but never even realised as they thought that was the 'norm.' Basically to ferment the seeds, beans, nuts and grains you need to cover with warm (room temp) filtered water for 24-48 hours and add a tbsp of acid (lemon juice, apple cider vinegar or pure whey) to each cup of seeds/grains etc you will be using. Leave on the bench to ferment and after the time is up drain the liquid, rinse and drain again. Now utilise and cook the seeds/grains as usual - simple as that!

Salted Almond Choc Chip Cookies

servings: 12 lrg or 22 sml
prep time: 5-10 minutes
cooking time: 15-20 minutes

Ingredients:
1.5 cups almond meal
1/3 - 1/2 cup dark choc chips
1 egg
2.5 tbsp honey (or pure maple syrup)
2.5 tbsp coconut oil (or macadamia oil)
1 tbsp nut butter (or tahini)
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder (gluten free)
1/2 tsp sea salt

Essential oils

Essential Oils became an important part of my health journey years ago when initially treating my parasites. I would ingest oregano oil to not only kill my taste buds but also to help kill the parasites during my natural treatment. When I removed all of the toxic cleaning products from my household I would add lemongrass oil, lemon oil or tea tree oil to my cleaning products. A dash of peppermint oil in my water to cool my digestive system and a bath in lavender oil with magnesium to assist in relaxation. These oils have become a non negotiable in my everyday health routine and I would love to educate you on how they can benefit you.
